Rapid assessment on biofuels and the environment: overview and key findings – Executive Summary

Mar 2009

The Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) of the International Council for Science (ICSU) established the International SCOPE Biofuels Project to provide a comprehensive and objective, science based analysis of the effects of biofuels on the environment. The SCOPE Biofuels Project held a workshop in Gummersbach, Germany from September 22-24, 2008 to develop a “rapid assessment” of these environmental consequences. More than 75 scientists from 21 countries and representing a diversity of disciplines participated in this assessment, either in person at Gummersbach, as co-authors or reviewers of chapters in the report, or as advisors to the Project.
The report is summarized in this document and the key findings of the rapid assessment are provided. The information provided in this overview is fully supported with references in the report’s chapters. For ease of reading, the only references used here are citations to the pertinent chapters.
