Brazil: a country profile on sustainable energy development

Aug 2006

The primary objective of this study is to develop the first country profile in relation to sustainable energy development. It represents the first attempt of the IAEA to produce a comprehensive, systematic and forward looking approach for the formulation of such a profile.
A team of national and international experts has performed an overall assessment of the energy sector in Brazil using the proposed approach. This approach allows the assessment of alternative strategies that Brazilian policy makers might consider in formulating energy policies according to their priorities in pursuing different dimensions of sustainable development — social, economic, environmental and institutional. The final goal is to provide an assessment to foster progress towards a sustainable energy future.
The study demonstrates the practical application of this approach. It comprises quantitative and qualitative assessments of energy demand, supply and security; domestic resources; technology and trade; and scenarios of energy sector evolution under different policy assumptions to permit national decision makers to chart and monitor a course of sustainable energy development.
The report summarizes the analyses and findings and explores policy options useful to decision makers and energy and environmental specialists. The analysis provides a comprehensive assessment of the overall energy situation and the status of the major energy priority areas.
