Approaches and initiatives concerning sustainability criteria for bioenergy – Draft version

Jun 2008

At its third meeting the GBEP Technical Working Group (TWG) decided to establish a GBEP Task Force to work towards the development of a voluntary international sustainability framework of principles for bioenergy. The result of this work shall provide a reference for national policy-making and international cooperation programmes as well as for all interested stakeholders.
In Germany a research project has been performed, started in autumn 2006 and finalized in January 2008, covering a good deal of the above drawn scope of objectives of the task force.
This background paper summarizes essential contents of the research report with focus on the development of an inventory of what is being done on bioenergy sustainability internationally and identification and discussion of commonalities, differences and issues requiring further consideration.
This document includes a survey of initiatives for sustainability criteria and a selection of certification systems at work, with a selection of systems and evaluated characteristics and an interesting evaluation matrix.
