Sustainable international bioenergy trade: securing supply and demand - Technology report

Nov 2006

This document summarizes the main results and the direct input from all the Task 40 members, and addresses bioenergy trade from the current Task 40 member countries’ point of view.
The aim of this technology report is to highlight the main issues currently hampering (parts of) the international trade in biomass.
While this paper deals with bioenergy trade barriers and opportunities in general, a number of deliverables under the work program of IEA Bioenergy Task 40 specifically emphasize the sustainability aspects of biomass supply and demand. In some member countries of Task 40 the support measures for bioenergy are formally linked to sustainability and hence this issue receives particular attention.
Furthermore, bioenergy trade requires a good understanding of supply and demand issues. This overview discusses briefly the barriers on the supply and the demand that can hamper international trade, However, the paper does not present an exhaustive overview of all barriers related to biomass production, trade and use.
