Small-scale bioenergy initiatives: brief description and preliminary lessons on livelihood impacts from case studies in Asia, Latin America and Africa |

This report is based on a series of 15 International Case studies conducted between September and November 2008 under a joint initiative between FAO and the PISCES Energy Research Consortium funded by DFID. The case studies focussed on developing an improved understanding of the linkages between Small-Scale Bioenergy Initiatives and Livelihoods.
The report starts by introducing the study background before going on to outline the approach and methodology used in the case selections and providing overview analysis of the case types and the contexts within the case study countries. The case study methodology is then discussed in more detail describing the use of Market Mapping, 4 R’s and Livelihoods Framework tools in the case studies.
The cases are then introduced via a series of overview vignettes before an analysis is presented of the various common factors and inconsistencies between cases, taking a stepwise approach through the aspects covered by the case studies which are provided in full in Annex 1 of this report. This section concludes with a synthesis of the various contributions to Livelihoods capitals reported in the case studies for the range of Bioenergy initiatives.
A summary is then provided of preliminary lessons and conclusions which may be drawn from the case studies and it is hoped that these will inform and stimulate debate about the role of Small-Scale Bioenergy projects in contributing to rural livelihoods. These conclusions are likely to be of interest to stakeholders at many levels and if accepted it is hoped that these may provide important guidance to initiative design and strategies regarding Bioenergy.
The final section of the main body of the report includes recommendations for further work relating to Small-Scale Bioenergy Initiatives, building on and developing in more detail the case studies, preliminary conclusions and approaches in this study.
