Sustainability criteria and certification systems for biomass - Final report

Feb 2008

The sustainability of biomass for energy and transport fuels has a warm attention in all strata of stakeholders and policy makers. The European Parliament, national initiatives, international working groups and a number of NGO advocate certification of biomass to ensure greenhouse emission reductions and production of biomass in a social and environmentally sustainable way, expressed in various concept sets of principles, criteria and indicators.
BTG Biomass Technology Group BV has finalised its study on Sustainability Criteria and Certification Systems for Biomass Production, carried out on behalf of the European Commission. The report observes that an obligatory EU based certification scheme can effectively monitor greenhouse gas emissions of biomass production including the effects of carbon stocks as well as biodiversity protection. The scheme would create a substantial demand for sustainably produced biomass in EU member states and thereby setting the international standard.
