The GBEP Secretariat, hosted at FAO Headquarters in Rome, is the principal coordinator of the Partnership's communications and activities. The Secretariat is mainly supported by Italy and receives additional support, past and present, from Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, and UN FAO.

GBEP Secretariat Team

 

Maria Michela Morese

Energy Team Leader

Ms. Morese is a Senior Natural Resources Officer at FAO and the leader of the Energy Team. She is responsible for the overall supervision of the GBEP Secretariat.

Since the establishment of the Partnership in 2005, up to 2023, she was the Executive Secretary of GBEP. Previously she worked for six years for the Government of Italy as negotiator in various international environmental processes.

Michela holds a degree in Political Science-International Relations and a post graduate certificate in International Protection of Fundamental Human Rights from La Sapienza University in Rome, as well as a Master in Environmental Governance and a PhD in Forest Ecology from La Tuscia University in Viterbo.

 

Tiziana Pirelli

GBEP Coordinator

Dr. Pirelli is the coordinator of the GBEP Secretariat which is based at FAO Headquarters in Rome. She is responsible for the development of the GBEP programme of work and its related field projects.

Dr. Pirelli is dedicated to the implementation of projects aimed at improving the sustainability of natural resources management in local agrifood chains, especially through the establishment of integrated bioenergy pathways.

In 2016, she joined FAO and the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) as lead technical advisor for the implementation of the GBEP Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy in Paraguay and Vietnam; she delivered trainings to build and strengthen the capacities of local stakeholders to implement the GSI for bioenergy in Ghana, Togo and Philippines; and she worked to strengthen positive linkages between Wood energy and Forest Landscape Restoration realms in SSA, as a contribution to the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative - AFR100. She has also contributed to the work of the Climate Smart Agriculture and the Forest and Farm Facility teams in FAO, respectively in Botswana and Ecuador, and in Zambia.

She holds a Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences and Technologies and a PhD in “Economics, ecology and preservation of agricultural and landscapes-environmental systems” both from the University of Udine. 

 

Constance Miller

Deputy Coordinator

Ms Miller joined the GBEP Secretariat in 2016 and is responsible for supporting the development of the GBEP programme of work and its related field projects.


Prior to joining GBEP, she worked at FAO YUNGA (Youth and United Nations Global Alliance), bringing environmental issues to youth through publications and conferences. Previously, she worked in the private sector providing consultancy services related to the circular economy. She has also worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds on agricultural advocacy and conservation of agricultural habitats for endangered bird species, and for the Borneo Nature Foundation conducting research on the behavioural ecology of wild primates in Indonesia. 


Constance holds an MSc in Sustainable Development from SOAS, University of London, and an MA in Natural Sciences and Management from the University of Cambridge.

 

 

Marco Colangeli

Programme Adviser

Mr. Colangeli joined the GBEP Secretariat in 2012. He is Programme Adviser assisting the GBEP Secretariat in the overall project implementation, with particular focus on FORBIO project.


Prior to joining GBEP, Marco served as Bioenergy Consultant for the FAO BEFSCI project and worked for the International Relations Office of the Universitá degli Studi della Tuscia as Environmental Studies Coordinator.


He holds a BA in Forestry and Environmental Science, a MSc in Environmental Science for Large Urban Areas from Universitá degli Studi della Tuscia, and a MSc in Environmental Science and Policy from PACE University of New York. 

 

 

 

 

Lorenzo Traverso

Programme Adviser

Lorenzo Traverso joined FAO as a Consultant in 2016. Currently, he is working on the implementation of projects focusing on feedstock production, bioenergy value chains sustainability and GHG mitigation. Before joining FAO he was awarded with a Fellowship in Italy and Nepal on agriculture and food security. Lorenzo holds a B.A and a MSc in agricultural and environmental sciences and technologies and is a PhD student in Economics, Management and Quantitative Methods.

 

 

 

  

 

 

Matteo Milani

Volunteer


Matteo is half German and half Italian. He studied at the University of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, where he obtained an MSc in Economics with specialization in Behavioural Economics and Game Theory. Recently, Matteo worked in the Data Analysis Unit of Save The Children Italy. He supports the GBEP Secretariat in day-to-day activities, including  contributing to the drafting of project proposals related to the GBEP sustainability indicators and capacity building for sustainable bioenergy. He is passionate about languages, music and football.
