BIOPLAT-EU and FAO/GBEP International Workshop, 27 September 2021, 13.00-17.30 (CEST time).

The project BIOPLAT-EU (November 2018- October 2021), where FAO is part of a Consortium with 12 partners from Europe and Ukraine, had the objective to promote sustainable bioenergy in Europe using marginal, underutilized, and contaminated lands (MUC lands) for non-food biomass production, through the development and use of a web-GIS platform that serves as decision support tool. Sustainability assessments and considerations of this project have used the GBEP Sustainability Indicators as a reference. This Workshop had the aim to present the results of the project focusing on the demonstration of the webGIS Tool which allows users to search for MUC lands in Europe, to select a suitable crop and bioenergy pathway and conduct sustainability assessments including GHG emissions, water footprint, impacts on employment and much more.

IEA Bioenergy and GBEP Workshop, 15-16 June 2021

“How can biomass supply for bioenergy deliver multiple benefits and contribute to sustainable development goals?”

This workshop, hosted as part of the IEA Bioenergy strategic inter-task project on the role of bioenergy in a well-below two degrees (WB2) and SDG world, examined how biomass supply for bioenergy can contribute to SDGs beyond renewable energy supply and provide multiple co-benefits. The workshop focused on the relationships between the SDGs and different biomass supply chains and regions, while sharing best practice case studies from around the world. The workshop also built on these case studies to situate discussions between participants on how governance can further contribute to ensuring the sustainability of biomass supply chains and contributions to the SDGs.
