The hidden costs of biofuels

While biofuels have been touted by some as an ideal replacement for fossil fuels, as so often happens, the situation is more complicated than it appears at first. There is a wide variety of methods and raw materials available for making the fuels; while some of the resulting products can cut greenhouse gas emissions, this isn’t necessarily the case when all factors are considered. And many other environmental issues can come into play, not to mention social and economic factors such as food prices and land use.
