Grand Issues in Sustainability - Biofuels and Sustainable Development

A high-level international scientific workshop dedicated to the prospects for biofuels as an “engine” of sustainable development was held on 19-20 June at Venice International University on San Servolo Island, Venice. The workshop, which saw the participation of Corrado Clini, Chair of the Global Bioenergy Partnership, was organized by the Center for International Development of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Department for Environmental Research and Development of the Italian Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea, is part of a joint program launched in May 2006 by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea and Harvard University to support scientific research into sustainable development. This year, in particular, the research program is focused on the role biofuels can play in the global economy to combat poverty, reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and contribute to energy security.
