GBEP stays connected

09 Apr 20

The global health crisis has changed the way that many of us work – physical meetings have been cancelled and offices closed – but this does not mean that our opportunities for discussion and collaboration should also be limited.

Under the WGCB, commitment continues in the various activity groups. Although changes have had to be made to the annual schedule, one of our core objectives at this time is to provide adequate possibilities for learning and exchange through virtual meetings and webinars.

As part of Activity Group 7 (AG7) ‘Biogas’, a webinar on 7 May 2020 will explore the potential for biochar systems to contribute to sustainable agriculture. Prof. David Chiaramonti from the Polytechnic University of Turin will present the technical aspects of biochar, its benefits, and the synergies with biogas and landscape restoration. Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A and open discussion, moderated by Dr. Tiziana Pirelli (GBEP/FAO) who is a specialist on these themes in sub-Saharan Africa.

To receive updates and a calendar request, register for the webinar, sending an email to [email protected] with you name and affiliation.

Access the webinar through Adobe Connect meeting at 1330 CEST on 7 May 2020.

More information available here.

Further webinars are being organised for May and June. Later in May, we will hear some examples of positive linkages between wood energy and forest landscape restoration in a webinar organised under AG4 ‘Towards sustainable wood energy development’. These examples form part of a collection of experiences on this theme, and a report is to be released in conjunction with the webinar. In June, we will be organising a webinar on advanced liquid biofuels under the AG8. More details on how you can register for these webinars will be available shortly.

During this time, the GBEP family is also busy ensuring that the workplan for 2020 continues as fully as possible. The AG7 has recently published a Stocktaking Paper that analyses the factors that contribute to the success of biogas operations or projects in different regions of the world (Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia) using SWOT analysis. Meanwhile, under the TFS, development of the data entry sheets for the GBEP Sustainability Indicators are underway as planned, and the brochure for the Implementation Guide is being finalised in preparation for approval by Partners and Observers.

The GBEP family may be ‘distanced’ but we continue to be connected and work towards our common goal of promoting sustainable bioenergy!
