EC public consultation "Biofuel issues in the new legislation on the promotion of renewable energy"

19 Jul 07

In the context of its renewable energy policy, the EU has agreed to a target of 10% biofuels in its fuel use by 2020. However it seeks to encourage the use of sustainably produced biofuels, whether from the EU or from imports (to respond i.a. to the risks of deforestation for biofuel feedstock production, or to the cases of biofuel production processes increasing, rather than saving, greenhouse gas emissions). The Commission will hence make proposals for a "sustainability scheme", so that operators are able to determine which biofuels can be considered as such. The design of this scheme and its implementation modalities will certainly influence the amount and origin of biofuels which will be put on the EU market.
