Research: From Panda Poop To Biofuels

30 Aug 11

Giant pandas are cute and bamboo eating machines, and it’s their fiber-rich diet that could make this endangered species an ally in our quest to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Researchers at Mississippi State University said they have identified bacteria in panda’s poop that can efficiently break down the tough cell walls in plants and turn them into sugars, which can then be fermented into fuels. The result, which the researchers reported in the national meeting of the American Chemical Society this week, could lead to cheaper biofuels.
