Not only has the Task Force on Sustainability published an Implementation Guide for the GSI but it is also working to facilitate data consistency through the development of data entry sheets. A Brochure for Policy Makers has also been developed.

Bioenergy sustainability in Ethiopia and Kenya – results of GSI measurement

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has recently finalised the project “Building Capacity for Enhancing Bioenergy Sustainability Through the Use of GBEP Indicators” in Kenya and Ethiopia. The project – financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) – focused on two priority bioenergy pathways in each country, carefully selected in order to align with the development objectives of each country.

The Working Group on Capacity Building

The global health crisis has changed the way that many of us work – physical meetings have been cancelled and offices closed – but this does not mean that our opportunities for discussion and collaboration should also be limited. Under the Working Group on Capacity Building (WGCB), commitment continues in the various activity groups, focusing on learning and exchange through virtual meetings and webinars.

Understanding biogas at the regional level – report published by AG7

The new Stocktaking Paper of the Activity Group 7 on Biogas, released in April 2020, found that globally biogas is valued for its contribution to the circular economy: use of waste, substitution of fossil fuels, and co-production of fertiliser for enhancing crop yields.

The Activity Group 4 ‘Towards Sustainable Modern Wood Energy Development’ has been evaluating the many ways to improve the sustainability of the wood energy sector to ensure that it positively contributes to forest landscape restoration (FLR), as well as other environmental, social and economic objectives.

The European Green Deal

The European Green Deal, presented by the European Commission (EC) in December 2019, is, as described by Ursula von der Leyen President of the EC, “Europe’s new growth strategy”. It has the target of a carbon-neutral Europe by 2050 through one trillion euros of investment.
