GBEP Annual Meetings 2020

 

In a first for GBEP, this year, due to COVID-19, the GBEP Annual Meetings were held online, with over 45 participants across Partners and Observers, and external experts. The slightly condensed meetings went ahead very smoothly and there was good agreement on a lot of promising work to take place in the coming year.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Advanced Biofuels sector

 

In October 2020, GBEP held a webinar focusing on the impacts of COVID-19 on the Advanced Biofuels Sector. Given the reduced demand for transport fuels, the advanced biofuels sector has contracted together with the biofuels sector as a whole, which has seen an 11.6% drop in production compared with 2019. This is the first contraction is output since the 1990s.

Bioenergy sustainability projects under Horizon 2020 programme

FAO, together with twelve partners from a number of European Countries as well as Ukraine, is engaged in two research projects that revolve around bioenergy sustainability in underutilized, marginal and contaminated sites, known as MUC lands, in the context of Horizon 2020. The responsible production of feedstock for biofuels through well-designed sustainable biomass value chains, can enhance soil health and promote green resilience practices in agriculture, thus serving the objectives of the European Green Deal and fostering the bioeconomy.

UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration - What can bioenergy contribute?

"Preventing, halting and reversing the degradation of ecosystems worldwide."

This is the objective of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which begins in 2021. Under various international pledges - such as Land Degradation Neutrality targets, Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Climate Agreement and National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, and the Bonn Challenge - countries have committed to restore around 750 million to 1 billion hectares of land.

Reaching out to Youth 

In 2019, GBEP decided to increase its efforts to involve youth in its activities and the GBEP Secretariat has worked hard to push forward with this commitment in 2020.

Looking ahead - GBEP in 2021

The programme of work of GBEP in 2021 promises to be rich and varied. Due to the current global pandemic, this year's Bioenergy Week will be held online, 16-18 March 2021. With the online format of the event, GBEP hopes that the reach of the free event can be further extended and that more people can benefit from the expertise brought together for the various panel discussions and interactive sessions.
