GBEP Annual Meetings 2020
In a first for GBEP, this year, due to COVID-19, the GBEP Annual Meetings were held online, with over 45 participants across Partners and Observers, and external experts. The slightly condensed meetings went ahead very smoothly and there was good agreement on a lot of promising work to take place in the coming year.
Even with the setbacks due to the global pandemic, the GBEP family still carried out an impressive amount of work in 2020 to further the sustainable development of bioenergy. Much of this work took place online, with a large number of capacity development events on biochar, sustainable wood energy for forest landscape restoration, impacts of COVID-19 on the advanced liquid biofuels sector, the role of bioenergy in climate goals, and solutions for the sustainable supply of biomass and biofuels, among others.
On top of this, GBEP has also been actively developing new capacity development materials to be used not only by the general public but also youth. One example are the videos developed in the context of the collaboration between FAO/GBEP, GIZ and IEA Bioenergy on sustainable wood energy and FLR and the contribution to the SDGs.
Although the 2020 Annual Meetings were a success, GBEP Partners and Observers expressed the hope that we will be able to meet in person for the Annual Meetings to be held at the end of 2021, in order to ensure time for a more fruitful discussion.
