Looking ahead – GBEP in 2021
The programme of work of GBEP in 2021 promises to be rich and varied.
Due to the current global pandemic, this year’s Bioenergy Week will be held online, 16-18 March 2021. With the online format of the event, GBEP hopes that the reach of the free event can be further extended and that more people can benefit from the expertise brought together for the various panel discussions and interactive sessions. It will also be a chance to present the first GBEP Youth Award, which this year will prize students from African research institutions. The event is organized by GBEP in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), African Energy Commission (AFREC) and African Union Commission (AUC).
As well as the online Bioenergy Week, GBEP will also be holding many other smaller web conferences specifically on biogas, biomass for land restoration, and advanced liquid biofuels.
An exciting new work plan is also being developed under the Task Force on Sustainability to facilitate the implementation of the GBEP Sustainability Indicators with data entry sheets and a rapid tool. These two new products will be complementary to the Implementation Guide, and represent concrete steps towards GBEP’s goal of ensuring the accessibility of the Indicators for all users.
GBEP will also continue its focus on bioenergy as part of the broader bioeconomy.
