Lessons learned from the implementation of the GBEP indicators: projects’ results presented in Rome

The GBEP indicators’ implementation in Colombia, Ghana and Indonesia is reaching its conclusion: the three projects’ fulfilments, together with the preliminary results of the pilot testing still ongoing in Germany, were presented in a seminar held in Rome on 15 November in the framework of the Activity Group 2 of the GBEP Working Group on Capacity Building (“Raising awareness and sharing of data and experiences from the implementation of the GBEP indicators”).

Apart from the inevitable differences arising from different national contexts, the four testing highlighted how the indicators are useful tools to catalyze flow of data from the bioenergy sector to research and government, who will then use it to develop policies to guide the national practices. All four countries considered the GBEP indicators an extremely useful tool to facilitate the sustainable development of bioenergy. Despite the challenge represented, the practical implementation of the indicators in many more countries was strongly suggested, also with the involvement of the private sector.

In light of a further advancement in the knowledge and information sharing of the experiences derived from the application of the indicators in the field, the Activity Group has created a data platform on the GBEP website: the objective is to provide a report of relevant documents to help the implementation of the GBEP indicators and share related lessons learned. In addition, a discussion forum has been made available on the GBEP website for Partners and Observers of the Partnership as a powerful tool for sharing data and experiences on the implementation of the indicators.
