GBEP meetings in Rome lead the way forward: Italy and Brazil reconfirmed Chairs and forthcoming new activities in Latin America agreed

At the end of an intense week of GBEP technical meetings, the 14th Steering Committee of the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) paved the way forward for the next biennium by reconfirming the Chairmanship of Italy and Brazil for the next biennium and by endorsing the forthcoming capacity building activities in Latin America.

Capacity building for sustainable bioenergy in the ECOWAS countries: biomass resource assessment and mapping seminar follows up on Bamako forum

Biomass resource assessment and mapping were recognized as critical for an effective and efficient planning of bioenergy production and use in the ECOWAS region during the ECOWAS- GBEP Regional Forum held in Bamako last March: the second workshop organized by the Activity Group 1 (“Regional Forums/Workshops on Sustainable Modern Bioenergy") was held in Rome on 13-14 November to focus precisely on these issues.

Lessons learned from the implementation of the GBEP indicators: projects’ results presented in Rome

The GBEP indicators’ implementation in Colombia, Ghana and Indonesia is reaching its conclusion: the three projects’ fulfilments, together with the preliminary results of the pilot testing still ongoing in Germany, were presented in a seminar held in Rome on 15 November in the framework of the Activity Group 2 of the GBEP Working Group on Capacity Building (“Raising awareness and sharing of data and experiences from the implementation of the GBEP indicators”).

Fostering sustainable bioenergy development: Brazil and FAO tools

The third day of the GBEP meetings in Rome (15 November 2012) saw a preparatory seminar for the “study tour/bioenergy week” to be held in Brasilia in March 2013. The seminar intended to initiate an exchange of information on sustainable bioenergy experiences, and to this end experts from Brazil (leading Partner of the study tour) and FAO (hosting organization of the workshop) were invited to share their experiences.

Africa and Brazil establish new partnership to enhance agricultural innovation and development in Africa: the Africa-Brazil Agricultural Innovation Marketplace

Agriculture represents an important segment of the economies of Africa and Brazil. In addition, similarities in climate, ecosystems, agricultural practices, and culture may facilitate knowledge sharing and technological cooperation. In this context the Africa-Brazil Agricultural Innovation Marketplace was established to link Brazilian and African experts and institutions to develop cooperative projects.

Global Bioenergy Perspectives: Greenhouse Gases Database now available on FAOSTAT

At the 17th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 17) in Durban last year, countries agreed to report their greenhouse gas emissions at least biennially, starting end of 2014. In this context, on 10 December 2012 FAO released a new domain on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on both FAOSTAT and its new pilot version FAOSTAT3. This is intended as the first in a range of services aimed at agri-environmental indicators, to help member countries enhance their capacity to identify, assess and report environmental statistics.
