GBEP welcomes two new African partners, confirms Clini as chairman

The Global Bioenergy Partnership welcomed two new partners from Africa at its  5th Steering Committee meeting, bringing the prospect valuable contributions from this important continent to its work promoting sustainable bioenergy development.

Representatives from Sudan’s Ministry of Environmental and Physical Development and the Vice President’s Office of Tanzania signed the GBEP’s Terms of Reference at the meeting, which was held in Rio de Janeiro on 18 June, hosted by the Brazilian Government. These new additions bring the number of countries that are part of the partnership to 14, which come on top of the 10 trade associations and intergovernmental and civil society organisations that are also partners. Many other countries and international organisations participate in GBEP activities as observers.

GBEP welcomes new partners who wish to actively contribute to its programme of work and is working to facilitate the engagement of more developing countries.

The Steering Committee also confirmed Corrado Clini, Director General of the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea of Italy as chairman of the partnership. The co-chairmanship was assigned to André Corrêa do Lago, Director of the Department of Energy in the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil.

At the meeting in Brazil, the GBEP agreed to form a task force on sustainability, which will work with a wide range of stakeholders to develop a set of science-based criteria and indicators regarding the sustainability of biofuels. A reference work on criteria and indicators for sustainable development of bioenergy will be finalised by April 2009. (For more details on the task force, see item below).

GBEP partners also agreed that sustainable biofuels can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy security and enhance economic development, especially in rural areas.

Details of the Steering Committee meeting are available on the GBEP website.
