GBEP online resources to help with financing, assessing bioenergy potential

As part of its work towards creating a new GBEP focus area on financing, capacity building and technology cooperation for sustainable bioenergy, two reports were developed by the Secretariat of the partnership and are now available on the GBEP website that should provide useful resources for countries and organisations keen to put bioenergy projects or programmes in action.

The report on “Financing options for bioenergy projects and programmes” aims to provide governments and project developers in developing countries with a useful list of available financing options worldwide for bioenergy projects and programmes. It also gives guidance for accessing and requesting international financing. It will be updated as required by GBEP.

The document is divided in two parts. The first section outlines funds that are global in scope and divides them by donor category (multilateral funds and partnerships, national initiatives, and foundations). In the second section, types of financing are described according to their regional scope (Africa, the Americas and Asia).

Potential sources of financing can be identified by checking the country and project criteria detailed in the template for each financing option.

The report on “Analytical tools to assess and unlock sustainable bioenergy potential” provides a collection of some important analytical tools for decision-makers at regional, national or local levels in countries facing strategic decisions in developing a modern bioenergy sector. The resource was developed in collaboration with UNEP and FAO.

The first part of the report contains the collection of real analytical tools – often computer-based – to assist bioenergy decision-making, including defining options and considering related key risks and opportunities. It offers guidance on land suitability assessment (where?), technology options (what?) and implementation (how?). The second part gives an overview of sourcebooks, guidelines, handbooks and datasets on issues ranging from stakeholder engagement to mitigation options and good practices, with the aim of providing decision makers with the technical resource material necessary for them to take well informed decisions on these issues.
