GBEP agenda for 2012 and other events

GBEP’s calendar of activities will continue in 2012, focusing on events in Africa, Asia and Latin America ahead of the Rio+20 Summit, to be held in Brazil in late June.

The Capacity Building Activity Group "West African Regional Forum on Sustainable Modern Bioenergy" will plan and implement a regional forum in West Africa during the first quarter of 2012, tentatively in Bamako (Mali) to engage and train policy makers and stakeholders from the 15 Member States of ECOWAS about the benefits and challenges of modern bioenergy. The regional forum will be co-organized by ECOWAS/ECREEE, with participation by U.S. officials and experts and potential participation by FAO, the UN Foundation, UNEP, Brazil, Sweden and The Netherlands.

Late June will see the 13th meeting of the GBEP Steering Committee and the second meeting of the Working Group on Capacity Building for Sustainable Bioenergy held in Rio de Janeiro. The meetings will take place back-to-back with the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Rio de Janeiro on 20-22 June.

Among other events of interest:

•    The World Future Energy Summit, the annual summit for alternative energy, clean technology and environment industries will take place in Abu Dhabi on 16-19 January. The Summit theme for 2012 is Sustainable Energy for All and will see the launch of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All

•    Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development: the Conference will take place in Brazil on 20-22 June to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. The objective of the Conference is to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges. It will focus on two themes: green economy in the context of sustainable development; poverty eradication and the institutional framework for sustainable development.

•    Conference on Sustainable Biomass for Electricity (SB4E) to be held in Güssing, Austria on 2-4 May 2012. Organized by UN-Energy in cooperation with the Global Bioenergy Partnership and other partners, the Conference will provide an opportunity for governments, international organizations and the private sector to share their respective experiences and to join efforts towards a common understanding of SB4E and practical ways to achieve this.
