GBEP publishes report on sustainability indicators and activates piloting projects

The Global Bioenergy Partnership's (GBEP) Task Force on Sustainability concluded three years of work in Tokyo in November by submitting to the Steering Committee the report “The Global Bioenergy Partnership Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy”, which includes the methodology sheets for the set of 24 indicators already agreed at the May meetings in Washington.

Work on capacity building for sustainable bioenergy kicks off in Tokyo

GBEP officially entered a new phase of work in November with the first meeting of its Working Group on Capacity Building for Sustainable Bioenergy (WGCB), held in Tokyo on 16 November 2011. The meeting was opened by Brazil and Italy, nominated co-chairs ad interim by the 11th Steering Committee in May, and later agreed on the co-chairmanship of The Netherlands and U.S. for the next two years. .

GBEP roundup from Tokyo: news from steering committee meeting, workshop and symposium

The 12th Steering Committee meeting of the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) was held in Tokyo on 17 November 2011 and attended by 29 Partners and Observers. The meeting welcomed the request of the Organization of American States (OAS) to become a GBEP Observer and saw the participation of Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as Observers for the first time. The gathering also agreed on the proposal to extend the Italian Chairmanship and the Brazilian Co-Chairmanship for another year, through 2012.

UN to launch International Year of Sustainable Energy for All (SEFA) at World Future Energy Summit in January

Next month’s World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi will see the launch of the 2012 International Year of Sustainable Energy for All (SEFA), as designated by the United Nations General Assembly in recognition of the importance of energy access for sustainable economic development and supporting achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

In Rome international seminar about capacity development for bioenergy

Bioenergy has become a key issue on the international agenda, and the close relation between bioenergy and sustainable development has been addressed in more than one occasion. The ability of countries to strengthen their capacities to produce and use bioenergy in a sustainable manner is crucial to ensure a viable development.
