Bioenergy and Sustainable Energy for All initiative:  the Sustainable Bioenergy High-Impact Opportunity

“Energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increased social equity and an environment that allows the world to thrive”: with these words the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon guided and inspired the Sustainable Energy for All initiative (SE4ALL), sharing its vision for how governments, business and civil society, working in partnership, can make sustainable energy for all a reality by 2030. He launched Sustainable Energy for All as a global initiative that would mobilize action from all sectors of society in support of three interlinked objectives:
1.    providing universal access to modern energy services;
2.    doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and
3.    doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

The SE4ALL agenda has identified 11 Action Areas which address power generation and the principle sectors of energy consumption, in addition to identifying cross-cutting mechanisms designed to support effective sectorial action and address existing obstacles. Sustainable Energy for All is focusing currently on creating action and generating commitments within an initial number of High-Impact Opportunities (HIO). These HIOs, which fall within the 11 Action Areas of the Action Agenda, are defined based on their significance and ability to make an immediate impact towards reaching Sustainable Energy for All’s three objectives. By building strong partnerships, encouraging common action, and forging lasting commitments, High-Impact Opportunities will drive positive outcomes in extending and enhancing access to, and implementation of, sustainable energy.

Within this framework, the Sustainable Bioenergy High-Impact Opportunity – co- chaired by FAO and IUCN with the support of Novozymes acting as Secretariat - has been established with the aim to catalyze deployment of sustainable bioenergy, including clean cooking solutions; increased agricultural productivity; energy from municipal solid waste; sustainable aviation biofuels and cellulosic ethanol. Sustainable Bioenergy High-Impact Regional Initiatives will align with the SE4All regional hubs and seek to reduce transaction costs to sustainable bioenergy development and deployment in the area of policy support, finance support, knowledge support and project development.

To achieve these ambitious goals the HIO has put in place a number  of Sustainable Bioenergy Projects and High-Impact Initiatives, in synergy with the most relevant stakeholders in the sector:
•    Bioenergy and Food Security (UN FAO)
•    Bioports for Sustainable Aviation (KLM and SKYNRG)
•    Policy Tools Promoting Sustainable Bioenergy (International Energy Agency and UN FAO)
•    Smallholder Sustainability Certification (RSB and Boeing)
•    Sustainable Aviation Biofuels (UN ICAO, Carbon War Room & Boeing)
•    Sustainable Bioenergy in Africa (PANGEA and NEPAD)
•    Sustainable Bioenergy in Latin America (IDB and Novozymes)
•    Sustainable Biofuels for Maritime and Heavy Trucking (Carbon War Room

The Sustainable Bioenergy HIO has held its first Steering Committee meeting last 4 and 5 June in New York (USA), to discuss its programme of work and next steps.
