GBEP Task Force on Sustainability starts work on attribution, relations between Indicators and Sustainable Development Goals analysed

Chaired by Mr. Sven Olov Ericson from Sweden and Mr. Kwabena Ampadu Otu-Danquah from Ghana, the Task Force on Sustainability (TFS) met on 1 December 2016 and re-instated the Environmental, Social and Economic sub-groups, with leadership provided by Germany and UN Environment (Environmental), FAO and Argentina (Social), and Italy and Japan (Economic). The three sub-groups will mainly work electronically via e-groups and teleconferences to develop the implementation guide for the GBEP Sustainability Indicators (GSIs). Their work will be supported by the Activity Group 2 (AG2) as new experiences become available from countries where implementation of the GBEP indicators is ongoing or planned.

The AG2 work on indicator experiences will also be used as a basis for a technical report on attribution, kindly contributed by Germany. An outline of this report was presented and discussed at the meeting. This work will cover all sub-groups, given that the attribution issue is cross-cutting to all indicators, and will ultimately feed into the guidance provided in the Implementation Guide.
The meeting also saw the presentation of a draft outline of a technical paper on the relation between Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the GSIs, kindly contributed by Germany. The document responds to the request made during last year’s meeting of the TFS to understand the GSIs in the context of the SDGs. To this end, the linkages between the SDGs and GSIs were presented, both in terms of how the GSIs could contribute to the SDGs and vice versa. Contributions and inputs from Partners and Observers on this technical paper are welcome.

Germany was praised for their strong support to the Task Force on Sustainability and specifically, not only on their leadership on the technical drafts on attribution and the linkages between SDGs and GSIs, but also for the support they will provide in 2017 in a series of events related to the TFS work. In June/July 2017, a workshop will be organized in Bonn to discuss interim results on the technical paper on linkages between SDGs and GSIs; in November 2017, the implementation guide and the issue of attribution of bioenergy impacts will be discussed in a seminar to be held in Rome, back-to-back to the GBEP regular meetings. A further event on this topic might be held in mid-2018 in Bonn, if deemed necessary for the work of the Task Force.
