Priority areas

The Partnership focuses its activities in three strategic areas:
Sustainable Development - Climate Change - Food and Energy Security.

In line with GBEP’s Terms of Reference and the state of the international debate on bioenergy, GBEP Partners selected the following priority areas for the immediate programme of work:

  • Facilitate the sustainable development of bioenergy
    The GBEP Task Force on Sustainability, established in 2008 under the leadership of the United Kingdom, and then of Sweden, has released in December 2011 the report The Global Bioenergy Partnership Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy. The Task Force is now proceeding with piloting projects of the indicators both at the national level and through cooperation projects in Ghana, Colombia and Indonesia.

  • Test  a common methodological framework on GHG emission reduction measurement from the use of bioenergy
    The GBEP Task Force on GHG Methodologies, established in 2007 under the joint leadership of the United States and the UN Foundation, has completed the first stage of its work and has released a report containing a common methodological framework for the use of policy makers and stakeholders when assessing GHG impacts by which the results of GHG lifecycle assessments could be compared on an equivalent and consistent basis. The Task Force is implementing the framework which may become a useful tool for domestic measurement, reporting and verification set out in the Copenhagen Accord, for bioenergy projects.   • Facilitate capacity building for sustainable bioenergy
    The GBEP Working Group on Capacity Building for Sustainable Bioenergy (Working Group), established in May 2011 and co-chaired by The Netherlands and the United States since November 2011, is promoting the dissemination, use, and implementation of the outcomes of the GBEP Task Forces on GHG Methodologies and on Sustainability through activities and projects. It raises awareness of the potential benefits of sustainable modern bioenergy through multiple means, including workshops, study tours, public forums and other ways to present sustainable practices and assess resources. The activities and projects developed within the Working Group are country driven. Its main focus is to facilitate collaboration among GBEP Partners and Observers for capacity building projects and related activities. The Working Group is also facilitating cooperation and capacity building through sharing information, stimulating discussion, and identifying opportunities for cooperation on sustainable bioenergy development and deployment, as well as encouraging sharing of lessons learned, identifying and disseminating information about existing tools and resources available from both the public and private sources and facilitating appropriate linkages between them.

  • Raise awareness and facilitate information exchange on bioenergy
    GBEP’s awareness-raising and information management activities seek to increase the understanding of issues related to bioenergy development.


GBEP and the G8/G20

GBEP reports yearly to the G8 on its activities and programme of work in response to the mandates received from the G8 Leaders since 2005:
