Bioenergy in the context of the broader bioeconomy

Bioenergy forms part of both the bioeconomy, and the global energy system. As with any system with a multitude of linkages, there are inevitably synergies and trade-offs between the components. In consequence, initiatives to foster overall sustainability of biomass should be cross-sectoral to be able to effectively take into account cumulative impacts of multiple sectors, whilst also taking advantage of potential synergistic biomass uses across sectors. GBEP has the opportunity to have an important – and possibly even unique - role to play in facilitating exchange of views and dialogue, and promote joint understanding, considering “bioenergy within the bioeconomy” context.

In light of this, in 2020 the Task Force on Sustainability established a working group to work on the thematic area of "Bioenergy in the context of the broader bioeconomy". The group is led by IEA Bioenergy.

In October 2020, a workplan was established a agreed for the group to deal with "sustainbility governance of bioenergy within the bioeconomy". Below you can find the outputs of this work:

Technical paper "Linking bioenergy and the bioeconomy: The GBEP Sustainability Indicators for Bioenergy and sustainable bioeconomy indicators - similarities, differences and perspectives for convergence" prepared by ifeu in 2022.

Technical Paper - prepared for IEA Bioenergy Task 45 and the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) Task Force on Sustainability by the International Institute for Sustainability Analysis and Strategy (IINAS) - entitled "Sustainability governance of bioenergy and the broader bioeconomy".
